Dissolve the sugar in the water, then
sprinkle on the yeast.

Leave in a warm place for 10-15
minutes, or until frothy.

Mix together the flour and salt and rub
in the margarine.

Make a well in the centre and pour in
the yeast liquid.

Mix until the dough is pliable and
leaves the sides of the bowl clean.

Turn on to a lightly floured surface
and knead for 10 minutes.

Wrap loosely in greased polythene and
leave in a warm place until doubled in size.

Heat the oven to 200oC (400oF),
Gas 6.

Grease and warm a 450 g loaf tin.

Turn the dough into a large bowl, add
the treacle, margarine and ginger and mix until the mixture is smooth
and no longer sticky.

Turn into the loaf tin and smooth the
top.

Cover loosely with greased polythene
and leave in a warm place until the dough reaches the top of the tin.

Bake for 30-35 minutes.

Remove from the oven, stand on a wire
rack and brush the top with the melted honey.
