Treacle Bread Recipe

Ingredients :

black treacle

buttermilk

plain flour

salt

ground ginger

mixed spice

bicarbonate of soda

caster sugar

margarine

Method :

Preheat oven to 180C Gas Mark 4. Grease and flour a 20cm square cake tin. Melt the treacle and mix with the buttermilk. Sift the dry ingredients together and rub in the margarine. Pour in the treacle and buttermilk and mix to a soft consistency. Turn in to the cake tin and bake for about 60 minutes, until golden and cooked through. Cover with foil during cooking, if necessary, to prevent over browning.

Makes 12 slices

If you like a strong black treacle flavor, use 3 tbsp; if you prefer a milder taste, use 2 tbsp.
