Use your fingertips to rub 1 tbsp of
the butter or margarine into the flour, until the mixture resembles fine
breadcrumbs.

Lightly beat the egg and skimmed milk.

Add to the flour mixture and blend well
to make a stiff dough.

In a large saucepan, bring the water to
the boil.

Remove form heat and add the sugar.

Stir to dissolve completely.

Add the remaining butter or margarine
and the golden syrup.

Stir well.

Return to the heat and bring to the
boil.

Break off small pieces of the dough and
form into balls about the size of large marbles.

Drop the dumplings into boiling syrup.

Boil dumplings for 20 minutes, until
light and fluffy.

Serve the dumplings immediately with
the syrup spooned over.

Hot or cold low fat custard sauce or
low fat natural yoghurt make good accompaniments.
